Hearing & Hearing Aids

Hearing Tests

Whether it’s a baby’s first screening, a child’s school-related hearing check, or routine care for adults and seniors, our team is here to ensure hearing health is supported at every step of life’s journey.

  • At Sound, we believe in a thorough and personalized approach to your assessment. We take the time to listen to your concerns and understand your overall communication needs. Using a combination of objective and subjective tests, we provide a complete picture of your hearing health.

    • Medical history and interview: Understanding your unique hearing journey.

    • Physical examination: Checking the outer ear and ear canal with otoscopy.

    • Audiogram: How well you hear specific pitches that represent the sounds of speech, as well as how well you can hear and understand words and sentences in both quiet and background noise.

    • Middle ear measurements: Assessing the eardrum and middle ear with tympanometry and acoustic reflexes.

    • Inner ear measurements: Using otoacoustic emissions to evaluate inner ear function.

Our goal is to provide a complete and clear understanding of your hearing, so we can help you stay connected to the sounds and people that matter most.

  • Your child's hearing is essential, and our team is committed to delivering prompt and accurate insights into their hearing abilities. No matter their age, we are here to help. We warmly welcome children from all backgrounds, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder or those who may have faced challenges completing hearing evaluations elsewhere. Our pediatric evaluations include the following components:

    • Birth and medical history and interview. Your child’s hearing and communication journey.

    • Physical examination: Checking the outer ear and ear canal with otoscopy.

    • Audiogram: How well your child hears specific pitches that represent the sounds of speech as well as how well they can hear and understand words. For younger children or those not able to wear headphones, this can be done through speakers.

    • Middle ear measurements: Assessing the eardrum and middle ear with tympanometry and acoustic reflexes.

    • Inner ear measurements: Using otoacoustic emissions to evaluate inner ear function.

  • We provide initial hearing screenings for newborns delivered at home or a birth center (and who did not receive a hearing screening) and who have no family history of hearing loss or risk factors for hearing loss.

We can not see babies for secondary hearing screenings - those who are born in a hospital setting and refer on their initial screening will be referred for follow-up screening by the state newborn hearing screening program.

Our newborn hearing screenings include the following components:

    • Birth and medical history and interview. Your child’s hearing and communication journey.

    • Physical examination: Checking the outer ear and ear canal with otoscopy.

    • Middle ear measurements: Assessing the eardrum and middle ear with tympanometry and sometimes with acoustic reflexes.

    • Inner ear measurements: Using otoacoustic emissions to evaluate inner ear function.

  • We are in-network with Blue Shield PPO and Cigna PPO, making it easy for us to bill these plans directly for you. We accept all other PPO plans as an out-of-network provider, providing you with detailed reimbursement statements (medical superbills) to help you with self-reimbursement.

Hearing Aids

The Sound Holistic Hearing Program goes beyond hearing aids, connecting you with accessories, auditory training, and support that are essential for better hearing.

  • With competitive pricing and a diverse product portfolio, our Doctors of Audiology help to identify the technology that is right for you. We primarily work with Oticon, Phonak, Starkey, and Widex products.

We use the Audible Contrast Threshold (ACT) test to predict speech-in-noise ability, which informs how we’ll program your hearing aids for noise reduction and directionality. We also use real-ear measures as an objective way to verify all hearing aid fittings.

  • LACE AI Pro is a clinically proven auditory training program that helps you learn to hear with your brain, not just your ears. It is an app you put on your phone that improves key listening and comprehension skills through self-paced modules: Speech in Noise, Working Memory, Rapid Speech, Speech Reading, and Communication Strategies.

The LACE AI Pro subscription is included when you obtain hearing aids through the Sound Holistic Hearing Program.

  • You’ll have access to our speech language therapists and our monthly Sound Communication Class.

  • Some insurance plans provide coverage for hearing aids. Our clinic is in-network with Blue Shield PPO and Cigna PPO plans and we can assist you in finding out more about your benefits with these plans! For all other plans, we recommend that you reach out to your insurance provider and ask if you have any hearing aid benefits that can be used at a clinic of your choice.

If you have a Cigna PPO plan, you will likely be required to obtain hearing aids through Amplifon Hearing Healthcare. We are a hearing aid provider for insurance plans that provide hearing aid benefits through Amplifon, TruHearing, and Your Hearing Network.

We are also a hearing aid provider for the California Department of Rehabilitation.

Custom Hearing Protection

The hardest part about gifting your ears (or someone else’s) custom hearing protection? Picking out a color!

  • We have accounts with Westone Laboratories and Starkey SoundGear for a number of custom earpieces:

    • Communication

    • Concert/Musician’s

    • Hunting/Shooting (including digital suppression)

    • Industrial

    • Racing

    • Swim/Surf

    • Sleep

  • Our custom earplug consults are 30 minute appointments.

You’ll meet with a Doctor of Audiology to discuss your hearing protection needs and together you’ll decide on the type, style, color, and any options (glitter is our favorite add-on).

The audiologist will take casts, or molds, of your ear canals (called earmold impressions) and send them in for production.

Turnaround for most custom earplugs is ~2 weeks. We’ll contact you to then come and pick them up!

  • We can also do impressions only if you are ordering from another manufacturer/vendor! Our cost is a flat fee of $100 for both ears :)

  • We are in-network with Blue Shield PPO and Cigna PPO plans. While we can bill these plans directly for a hearing test, they may not cover custom hearing protection. However, you can ask your plan if they have any coverage for HCPCS code V5299.

You can also use FSA or HSA funds to purchase custom hearing protection.
